AI MODEL REPURPOSES EXISTING DRUGS TO TREAT RARE DISEASES

A new AI tool, TxGNN, developed by Harvard Medical School researchers, is transforming the discovery of treatments for rare diseases by identifying existing drugs that can be repurposed. With over 7,000 rare diseases globally and only a fraction having FDA-approved treatments, TxGNN offers a breakthrough by identifying drug candidates from nearly 8,000 medicines for more than 17,000 diseases. By analyzing shared disease mechanisms, the AI model offers solutions for conditions that lack treatment options, significantly speeding up drug repurposing.

The tool is unique because it doesn’t rely on a one-disease focus like most models but instead uses shared genomic data to predict treatments across multiple diseases. This enables it to extrapolate from well-understood conditions to those that are poorly understood. The model also predicts side effects and contraindications, enhancing its usefulness in clinical applications. Validated against 1.2 million patient records, TxGNN has shown great promise in reasoning like a human clinician but with access to vast data.

The repurposing of existing drugs is particularly beneficial because it leverages medicines that have already gone through the approval process and have established safety profiles. The tool's ability to repurpose these medicines not only addresses rare conditions but could also help offer alternatives for more common diseases, providing more effective treatments with fewer side effects.
