Facebook has recently acknowledged that it is scraping the public data, including photos and posts, of all Australian adult users to train its artificial intelligence models. This revelation came during an inquiry where Meta's global privacy director, Melinda Claybaugh, confirmed that Australians do not have the option to opt out of this data collection, unlike users in the European Union.

The inquiry highlighted that unless users had consciously set their posts to private since 2007, all public content on Facebook and Instagram is subject to scraping. This includes the public photos of minors, although Claybaugh stated that accounts of users under 18 are not actively scraped.

In contrast, Meta has provided an opt-out option to EU users due to stringent privacy laws in that region. Claybaugh explained that the absence of such options for Australians is due to the lack of similar legal requirements in Australia. She emphasized the necessity of large datasets to develop effective AI tools, aiming to create more flexible and less biased products.

The inquiry raised concerns about privacy and data security, as Facebook's practices have come under scrutiny for their potential implications on user consent and data protection.
