WILL SIRI BECOME THE NEXT CHATGPT? BIG NEWS EXPECTED AT WWDC ON JUNE 10

The world of virtual assistants is an every changing space. OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are leading the charge, introducing advanced AI models capable of understanding and responding to inputs beyond text, including images, spoken language, and even video.

OpenAI's GPT-4o showcased its conversational prowess, complete with the ability to inflect tone, make sarcastic remarks, and even flirt. However, the demo was overshadowed by a controversy involving Scarlett Johansson, who accused OpenAI of digitally replicating her voice without consent, raising ethical concerns.

Google's Project Astra, a multimodal prototype, also demonstrated impressive capabilities, allowing users to discuss objects in their environment and even remember details about them. Elon Musk's xAI and Amazon are also reportedly working on multimodal chatbots, intensifying the competition.

Apple's Siri, once a trailblazer in voice-based interaction, now faces the challenge of keeping up with its competitors. While Apple has published research on multimodal AI and introduced Ferret, a model that can understand what's happening on your phone screen, it remains to be seen whether a multimodal Siri will be unveiled at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

Apple's approach to emerging technology has often been characterized by a wait-and-see strategy, which has paid off in some cases but not always. With Siri, Apple is expected to play catch-up rather than break new ground this year. However, significant improvements are anticipated, with Siri rumored to evolve into a more intelligent digital helper, and iOS 18 expected to bring fresh AI features.

As the race to create the most advanced and intelligent virtual assistant intensifies, the ethical implications of AI and the importance of obtaining consent when using people's likenesses or voices have come into sharp focus. The future of virtual assistants promises to be a fascinating and rapidly evolving landscape, with multimodal capabilities becoming the new standard.
